Mr Stoney is your Class Teacher. Mrs Wilkinson is your Teaching Assistant. We would like to welcome the new Year 6 Class of 2024/25 and look forward to a wonderful year ahead.
The children have been having a lot of fun learning all about matching & mirroring, counter balance and counter tension, travelling and sequencing during their gymnastics lessons. They have shown some fantastic creativity and agility during our sessions and hope to end the unit with a full sequence displaying their routine.
We recently had a visit from the Police to talk to the children about knife crime and the law surrounding knives. The children were very sensible about the issue, taking the matter very seriously. They got to ask questions and also had a little fun dressing and finding out what it is like to be in handcuffs.
Knowing that online safety for your children is a big concern, we feel that it would be beneficial to have guidance available on how best to protect your children. The following link will take you to a selection of videos advising on how to set up parental controls on a large number of devices. Alternatively, if you would prefer to read the guidance, please see the attached PDF (below). We will also be releasing a monthly newsletter advising parents on the most recent issues and online safety practices.

Parental Controls Guidance
This half term, the children have been learning all about classification and this week we decided to learn what DNA is and how it is now used by scientist to aid classification. The children then had a great time carrying out a practical investigation in which we removed the DNA from a variety of different fruits. Did you know that all the DNA in your body is enough to stretch to the Sun and back more than twice if it was laid end-to-end and that every cm of DNA can hold 10GB of information! Wow!
In PSHE with the help of some toothpaste and cocktail sticks, we having been thinking about how we can't take nasty words back once they are out and how we should stop and have more thoughts (hopefully nicer ones) instead of saying the first thing that comes into our head. With the use of an apple, we then considered what long term effect the nasty words have if they come out. We all agreed that 'if we have nothing nice to say, we should say nothing at all'.

Homework - Times Tables/Spelling/Reading
Times Tables practise is a key area and crucial to the foundations of the children's mathematical understanding and competency. In addition, practising spellings on Edshed is also crucial to the children's vocabulary development, recognition of spelling patterns and familiarity when applying it to their learning in class time so please encourage your children to do this regularly. In order to develop a love of reading and in-turn aid the children's subsconcious recognition of spelling patterns, sentence structures, vocabulary, punctuation, grammatical conventions and imagination, we not only need to encourage the children to read at every opportunity but also let them see that we also like to read. That is why I will regularly read to the children in class but would also encourage you to let them see yourself reading at home.
I look forward to your full support in encouraging your child to complete/practise their homework. Edshed spellings homework practise can be accessed on the link below. All children have their own logins for this site.
